The land
for the school has already been acquired and is ready for building.
It is situated in the mountainous heartland of central Tibet. The
site of the future Tibetan Art School is set in a dramatic,
inspiring landscape near the Nyingmapa monastery of Mindroling, in
Dranak County. Tourists are beginning to visit the area every year
to see the beautiful monastery and breathtaking scenery. The very
origins of Tibetan culture can be traced to this region. This is a
poor, primarily agricultural region. Water for irrigation is
scarce, so few pastoralists raise crops from this arid land. Most
people farm only for their subsistence. The double threats of
drought and flood mean a precarious life for the local population.
